HP-UX 11.00 (32-bit) seems to need the same treatment as IRIX with respect to pthread_detach. On my system, configure failed with:
checking for pthread_detach with <pthread.h>... no
configure: error: could not locate pthread_detach()
Adding LIBS=-lpthread to the configure command line fixed this.
